Claim 31

A sign to the priests?

Jesus sends a healed man through Leviticus's cleansing procedure; Acts later reports priestly converts.

The Old Testament text

Lev 14:11 · BSB
The priest who performs the cleansing shall present the one to be cleansed, together with these offerings, before the LORD at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting.

Translation note:

The claimed New Testament fulfilment

Jesus sends the healed man to a priest with the offering required by Moses, calling it a testimony. Some Christians connect this with the later report that many priests joined the faith.

“ Do not tell anyone,” Jesus instructed him. “But go, show yourself to the priest and present the offering Moses prescribed for your cleansing, as a testimony to them.”
So the word of God continued to spread. The number of disciples in Jerusalem grew rapidly, and a great number of priests became obedient to the faith.

Why Christians see a prophecy

Jesus specifically tells the healed man to show himself to a priest and present Moses’s offering as testimony. Some Christians connect that evidence with Acts’s later report that many priests accepted the faith.

Why it is less convincing

Leviticus describes restoration after someone has already healed. Luke links Jesus’s miracle with that rite, but Acts never says the incident caused any priest to convert. Several major events and much public preaching lie between the two reports.

Our assessment

Source claim incorrect

An unsupported extra step

The testimony to a priest is explicit. The supposed result—conversion of the priests in Acts—is not.
