Claim 22

A lamb without blemish

Exodus requires an unblemished animal. The New Testament calls Christ's sacrifice unblemished too.

The Old Testament text

Exod 12:5 · BSB
Your lamb must be an unblemished year-old male, and you may take it from the sheep or the goats.

Translation note:

The claimed New Testament fulfilment

Peter compares Christ's blood with that of an unblemished lamb. Christians see the flawless Passover animal as a pattern for Jesus's sinless sacrifice.

For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life you inherited from your forefathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or spot.
how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself unblemished to God, purify our consciences from works of death, so that we may serve the living God!

Why Christians see a prophecy

Exodus’s Passover animal is chosen without defect. Hebrews speaks of Christ’s unblemished offering, and 1 Peter of his blood as that of a spotless lamb. Christian interpreters see the older rite as a fitting pattern for Jesus’s morally perfect sacrifice.

Why it is less convincing

The Exodus instruction is for Israel’s Passover meal, not a forecast about one future person. The animal could be a sheep or a goat, and unblemished animals were used in other sacrifices. Scholars differ over whether 1 Peter specifically invokes Passover rather than sacrificial lamb imagery generally.

Our assessment

Plausible typology, not prediction

Plausible typology, not prediction

The correspondence is coherent as Christian sacrificial typology. It does not make Exodus 12:5 an independently testable prediction of Jesus.
